This show is great. I’ve made a point to just watch them on adult swim now that I know they already exist out there. Future Sailors beezy:
Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon
I’ve recently been drinking Wild Turkey 101 and the reliable Weller 90. They are good earthy whiskeys, even though they are different flavors the two share similarities as far as sweetness and oakyness go.
This week while at my local BevMo I decided to pick up a bottle that A) I had never seen before and B) was less than $30.00. Alas we have Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon a nice change from my recent regular pours.
I found it to be pleasantly fruity with hints of citrus after the initial alchohol whiffs (it is 94 proof) but even at 94 proof it was enjoyable served neat. It offered a chewy, buttery floral flavor with hints of some nutty vanilla sweets. A bit of water really brings out the best of this whiskey. The next morning my glass smelt of sweet cotton candy. It’s quite a treat.
Blues Run the Game
Another favorite tune of mine, I think this guy ran with Paul Simon and such. Jackson C. Frank – Blues Run the Game is a good album. None of the songs on there top the album title track though. Makes me want to wear a cardigan.
Sleep on Kaws = You Lose!
I’ve slowly been phasing out my old email and converting to gmail. Earlier tonight I opened my email to see these great kaws companion key chains. Seeing that it was around 9pm I was sure there would be none left. I visited the site to confirm that I was correct and mooch the photo so I can at least have a picture of them to look at ha ha (sadness) I only own three of the five in the set so I don’t feel too entitled. I never really cared for the glow companions, I mean I liked them but didn’t find them to be worth the loot… were I a baller I would buy them right now. Anyways on to the awesome keychains.
100% CSS Rollovers
This is one of my favorite little tricks I’ve managed to wrangle over the years of googling “css rollover.” It became a full proof thing when I figured out how ma.tt had done his rollovers on an older version of his site. Really though it isn’t rocket science (by any means) and anybody with moderate understanding of CSS and XHTML should have no problems figuring it out if they haven’t already.
I prefer doing it this way because it uses a plain unordered list so if something breaks they will always have the navigation in a plain unordered list. You also don’t have to do any ghetto stuff like use a transparent .gif as a place holder or use a sneaky span tag to have some sort of content associated to the button link (janky)… and it doesn’t need any javascript.
I use this method of making main navigation menus pretty when it’s a hand-coded website or when it’s a CMS with a fixed navigation. By fixed navigation I mean the client won’t be trying to change the main navigation all the time. Since every button needs an image with two or three states it can become a pain if the client keeps changing their mind.
So for starters you need a plain unordered list with some id’s for later on when styling the CSS. Every list item houses a link as a button is no good if it doesn’t link anywhere.
<ul id="nav"> <li id="one"><a href="#">one</a></li> <li id="two"><a href="#">two</a></li> </ul>
I created two buttons of equal width, this also works with various widths just be sure to add the width to the specific id. I use the sliding door method so each image has two button states (link and hover), if you were feeling slick you could add a third button for the active state to the same image. This avoids that annoying flicker upon hover when you haven’t cached the hover images yet because the hover is attached to the image that loads first.
Obviously you must be careful to align the buttons on the image so they don’t look like they jump when you hover. If your button is 25px tall the image must be 50px tall for two states and 75px if adding an active state. In my example here the images are 75px x 25px. Here are the buttons:
Next is the CSS:
#nav li {display:inline;margin:0;padding:0;} #one, #two {float:left;} #one a, #two a {display:block;height:25px;text-indent:-9999px;width:75px;} #one {background:url(one.png) no-repeat 0 0;} #one:hover {background:url(one.png) no-repeat 0 -25px;} #two {background:url(two.png) no-repeat 0 0;} #two:hover {background:url(two.png) no-repeat 0 -25px;}
It’s all pretty basic and can be expanded upon to suit your needs (ie: kill the float:left and they stack on top of each other or position them absolutely). All it requires is a bit of math but it’s easy, just be sure your button size is reflected in the hover state background position (-25px in above example) Here is a break down line by line of the above:
- #nav li {display:inline;margin:0;padding:0;} removes the bullets from the unordered list.
- #one, #two {float:left;} makes the list items float left so they sit next to each other in a row.
- #one {background:url(one.png) no-repeat 0 0;} and #two {background:url(two.png) no-repeat 0 0;} are the regular link states with their background positions at 0.
- #one:hover {background:url(one.png) no-repeat 0 -25px;} and #two:hover {background:url(two.png) no-repeat 0 -25px;} are the hover states with the top background position to set to -25px, this number is the height of your button.
Here is a demo page with it all working in case my writing is pure gibberish and you find it easier to see it and take it apart. View the demo page.
I also compiled a zip archive in case you are as lazy as I am. Download zip archive.
Also I’m done with ie6 so if it works great if it doesn’t I’m sure you will figure it out 🙂
Good Old Merle
Woke up with this Here in Frisco song playing in my dream (which I don’t remember) something about those sounds that open the song up. It’s a good rain song, a good drinking song as well as a song of sadness and lament. It’s a cool song as are most Merle Haggard tunes providing a safe haven for your ails and guarding them with the urge to drink up, suck it up and deal with it like a man (or particularly manly female who refuses to share what she’s actually thinking because it’s easier to write a song.) The type that is too poor to buy an apple but still refuses welfare checks because he is a working man.
It’s kind of funny that it’s just a still photo of merle the whole time but it was the first thing I found.
Woo Hoo!
I randomly received a gift card for $50 from t-mobile. Not a bad thing. I just spent it on a t shirt and 2 additional GB of RAM for my pc.
Mishka x Gargamel Hedoran
Being poor blows, I mean I been poor my whole life but there’s decent times and there’s bad times… these are the bad. Were I not so broke I wouldn’t even think twice about buying this little guy. To be honest he ain’t even my favorite of the bros I am more of a Standing Hedoran type of guy but I would still do it. I refer to this Hedoran as the hugger because he looks like he’s super stoked to see you and is all like “yaaaaaay! Lemme get a hug!” Seafoam and magenta colorway is the business.
EELS!
The Mighty Boosh is freakin awesome! I have had this song stuck in my head all day since seeing the show last night. Little did I know it was a BBC show (thought it might be related to the Frisky Dingo camp??) EELS!
Beetles pt. II
After more trolling the net I found out that carpet beetles love dust bunnies and spider webs which unfortuntley have plenty of. They also love to feast on dead mice in between walls and attics (better not have any of that) so I think I made lots of progress this weekend I almost vaccumed the entire house and threw away a ton of shit. I also found a hatchery of some sort so I think we should see a major reduction in the number of beetles bobbing around (found two today) alas if they start up like last week I’m going to have to call a steam cleaner man.
Go Away Carpet Beetles
So as of last week I have had Carpet Beetles freely roaming my house going from window sill to window sill and various corners and walls between. I am going crazy because they can fly, thankfully they are dumb as nails. They never fly away when I add them to the ziplock of death.
I have yet to figure out why they’re in my home or if they are invading my neighbors but it’s inexplicable! The closest guess anyone has made is that they came from the birds nests in the trees in my courtyard (located directly in front of my front door) I have killed at least 20 actual beetles and 1 larva worm (EEEEWWW!)
The best part of the story is that my landlord does not give a flying rat’s dick. He even tried to blame me like they’re roaches (which are directly related to dirty tenants… which we are not) Then he tried telling me it’s an HOA thing and to get an exterminator from craigslist!! Hopefully they plow right thru the carpet and he can regret not giving a f when he was told bugs that eat carpet were infesting his property.
I am currently trying to rid my household of these tiny little beetles and will post if I find a sure thing that is cost effective as well as effective at removing the beetles.
I love the hood
I was throwing away my trash today and a glimmer caught my eye… nappy lil’ tweek pizzo just chillin’ in the area the garbage trucks use to lift the dumpsters. I wanted to break it but not enough to touch it. I bet it happened last night when I heard the police going “whoop-whoop-whoop-whoooooooop” some tweeker stashed his pizzo and forgot. Hopefully those ghetto alley kids don’t know what to do with it.
